MIT Research How-to

Hi again,

Research is not always just a lot of fun. Some of the research departments put a lot of pressure on their members, both students and professors (publish or perish and everything). Even without external pressure, there are ups and downs, pretty much like everywhere else.

If you’re in a “down” phase, you can find some help in the MIT Research How-To (thanks to Julien for the link!). I like the “emotional factors” section. It’s a webpage signed by “A whole lot of people at MIT”, and its purpose is to explain why research can lead to frustrations and sometimes serious depressions, and to provide guidelines on how to overcome these issues.

So if your project fails, if you’re feeling stupid or unproductive, go and read it, it should make you feel better!
